The Communist Party of Benin (PCB) was founded in 1977 by the Communist League of Dahomey. The party was first called the Communist Party of Dahomey (Parti Communiste du Dahomey). The first secretary of the party was Pascal Fantodji. The PCB’s organ of publication is La Flamme.
The Communist Party of Benin was an illegal party that worked underground against the Kérékou regime. However, it began legal activity from 17 September 1993.
In the 1995 elections, the party was represented in the National Assembly by one deputy. In the 1996 presidential election, the party candidate Pascal Fantodji took 1.67 per cent (17,977) of the vote.
